Suicide Prevention
College is meant to be a time in which you explore what it is exactly that you wish to study as well as the possibility of changing your major.

Socializing can be very challenging depending on the cultural environment of your college. Some colleges & universities tend to have a rigorous tradition in which it may be very difficult for students to adapt to such an environment.

That is why, before you even begin going to the college, first investigate the college, not like Sherlock Holmes but more like a snoopy little kitten in search for new place to rest its mind. I'm using a cat as a metaphor here because in many cultures cats are believed to symbolize good luck & even safety. The kitten here should illustrate the calm in sanctuary in which you seek to find within your campus.

Look around the campus & ask yourself:

• Can I make friends here?

• How safe do I feel here to express myself?

• What sort of counseling services are available?

• Do I feel confident with the diversity here?

• Does the diversity & tolerance here seem to be superficial or, is it much more authentic?

• How confident do you feel when envisioning yourself here?

Getting the Facts
It is also highly recommended that you write down in a notebook all about your experiences & then have your questions answered by the staff & professors or administrators within the campus. If you must go from department to department, then go for it.

If it seems like too much, take a break, find a place to sit and clear your mind.
Practice mindful breathing.Take a look around your campus & decide whether or not this is the place for you.
How confident do you feel when envisioning yourself here?

Figure it Out

-- Ask an advisor for class advisement to maintain a proper schedule

-- Ask the campus counselor for best times to meet

-- Ask your therapist for a safety plan & HIPPA agreement between them & your campus counselor

-- Discuss with your academic advisor what is required to receive extra accommodations to help you succeed academically, mentally, emotionally & physically

-- Ask your professors for any special accommodations, oftentimes you may be referred to a student's with disabilities office & that would be a great place for you to go to & seek information

Exactly what you should look for on campus

-- Find out where the campus wellness center is,

-- Find out where the campus health office is,

-- Find out where the library is,

-- Free programs, check out the sports and athletics or recreational department

-- Free activities, check out the campus life office
